Amazon.com Product Description Looking to improve your course management skills? Turn to the uPro golf GPS system, which employs state-of-the-art GPS, aerial, and satellite technology to accurately render the details of thousands of golf courses. The uPro starts by providing the avid golfer with aerial and satellite photographs of the golf course, so you can see what the hole looks like before you play it. At the same time, the unit's built-in GPS system clearly locates the golf course hazards and flagstick, so you know what you're up against at any moment. With each glance at the 2.2-inch, high-resolution color screen, you can see a different view of the fairway, check out the upcoming sand traps and water hazards, or receive a distance marker that helps you select the correct club length. Even more impressive, the uPro's SmartView technology anticipates the hazards that you'll face on your next shot, so you can plan accordingly based on the strengths of your game. Don't want to carry water on your second shot? The SmartView technology's dynamically generated "viewports" will tell you which area of the fairway or rough will provide a water-free path.
The uPro offers aerial and satellite photographs of thousands of golf courses. |
The easy-to-comprehend user-interface is crisp and intuitive. | The uPro is remarkably easy to carry, with a sleek and unobtrusive design that fits in a pocket or belt holder without interfering with your natural golf swing. In addition, the unit has the quickest startup time of any golf GPS system, with a super-fast GPS locking system. And thanks to the high GPS sensitivity, the uPro remains locked even under the most extreme conditions. The uPro offers two basic modes for golf course downloads. In Basic mode, the uPro shows the distance to the front and back of all hazards and differentiates the type of hazards. Each hazard is automatically displayed in sequential order based on the current user position, and then is updated as the user moves throughout the hole. Basic mode also provides a green view, with large, easy-to-read numbers that depict the distance to the front, center, and back of the green. In Pro mode, meanwhile, the device offers a video flyover that lets the user see the layout of the hole from an aerial perspective. From the center of the green, users can see the 100-, 150-, and 200-yard markers. The Pro mode also offers scale-accurate measurements that are used to measure to and from any point on the golf course, even from the outskirts of the rough. The uPro is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X v10.4 or later (Windows 2000 is the oldest version of Windows that is compatible with the uPro). However, note that the uPro does not require any additional software to connect with the uPro servers. Instead, users can easily download golf courses at uPro's web site. Once you're online, the web site gives the user a list of all golf courses in the U.S.--in your choice of Basic or Pro mode--on a click-and-buy basis. The unit's GPS technology also automatically determines which courses are nearby. And as an add-on software download, the device can accept voice commands to make menu navigation virtually hands-free. The uPro comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a wall adapter, a USB cable, and a single free Pro mode download of any golf course. The device comes with a six-month warranty.

Very Disappointed February 27, 2010 R. Vanderheiden (Iowa) The unit generally functions as advertised on properly identified courses. My home course is mislabeled in the database and reflects the mapping from an entirely different course. My two attempts over a six month period to resolve this problem have resulted in "we're working on it" responses. The unit sits at home unless I'm headed out of town to play. There are better choices out there.
Save Your Money! Wait for a Version with Better Battery Life February 11, 2010 steve nameth (FL) At a price of $327 plus the $100 off coupon, how could you not buy it, so I did. My advice now... save your money unless you really don't need $225.
A few glitches getting it up, connected, and synched with the web site, but not too bad. Downloaded my 2 home courses and I was impressed with the flyover feature in pro mode. Took it to the course the next day, turned it on and got a messgae "NO Courses Found", so I was now out of luck for the day. Where the course downloads went, I don't know and it was especially surpising since you can't delete a course directly from the upro unit.
After redownloading the courses, it took it out the next day. The course downloads were there but the screen kept going blank as it went into power saver mode. The screen will go blank after 25, 45 or 90 seconds depending on how you set it. You can override this and leave the screen on permanently, but it is not recommended and I doubt you could play a full round before the battery goes dead.
What's the problem with the power saver mode. Well, you need to physically pick up the unit and push a button for it come back on. Therefore you can't leave the unit on in the cart and just glance at the yardage. Picking it 40+ times a round is a first class pain. Once you do pick it and bring it back to life it needs a few seconds to update the yardage (as the yardage does not get updated when in power saver mode). If you're like me and use it for the yardage on my approach shot to the green, you won't use the upro again until you've hit your next drive and are hitting your second shot on the next hole. After you wake up the upro it takes a few seconds for it to realize you've changed holes (since it doesn't update in power saver mode). You need to manually tell it you changed holes and then wait to it to change holes and then update the yardage.
Bottom line...2 or 3 times a round I'm in a location where I stuggle with yardage and the upro is really helpful. But in general, it's much easier to look for yardage markers than to be pushing buttons on this thing for 4 hours. It's an expensive toy that doesn't have the battery life necessary to make it really useful.
You have to pay to get your golf course!! December 27, 2009 Thomas P. Davis 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
These are cool toys, but why would you pay for free information. If you buy this brand, you will be paying to download a course. Golf Guru (basic) is still free--I'm sending this one back.
U PRO Golf GPS December 26, 2009 J. Jenkins (Temecula ,CA) Does what It's supposed to do, I am a "new" golfer, so every course is new to me The Flyovers are help full to me to, so that when I step up to tee off at least I know where I need to hit the ball, so, I'll have a good position for my second shot. Some times however in some of the flyovers it's difficult to distinguish between fairway and waterhazard they look the same color. On bright days I need to shade the screen to see flyovers, No problem with battery life. or downloading courses, Overall very helpful to me as am very poor at estimating distances, and it helps me choose the right club. Now if it could only help me find my lost balls it would be the perfect tool.

Junk November 9, 2009 Ed Mauldin (Reno, NV) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This item is advertised as Mac compatible, but it was not compatible with my Leopard 10.5.8 Operating System. After downloading files a Customer Service Representative sent, I was able to initialize the uPro and download 4 courses after paying $120 for 50 courses. I took the device out to play the next day, but turned it off after a couple of holes because it didn't offer any information that I didn't already have on the Cart's GPS Screen. As I was leaving the course, I tried to turn it back on to show a friend. It was dead. So, I immediately returned it to Amazon. However, uPro is refusing to refund the 4 courses that I downloaded, so I am in a Credit Card Dispute with them, which I will easily win since the information was never used and I returned the device. Advice - don't buy this piece of junk.
