Amazon.com Product Description Golf is a game of precision, so why depend on ballpark guesses when estimating the distance to the green? Enter the Izzo Swami 1500, a fully featured golf GPS unit that offers everything you need to approach the pin with confidence. Powered by the latest SIRFStar III chip and equipped with Insta-Lok technology, the Swami instantly calculates the distance to the front, center, and back of the green on more than 12,000 courses across the U.S., turning your golf game from piffling to precise. The Swami is easier to use and more accurate than a laser rangefinder. That's because the Swami measures distances without requiring a direct line of sight to the target, while a laser rangefinder can only measure to the flagstick or other defined objects within its sight. Plus, a rangefinder's accuracy is highly dependent on how far you are from the target, whereas the Swami's GPS technology is accurate to within a few feet. Most importantly, the Swami simply helps you play better golf. When you know the exact distance to the flag and the borders of the green, you can pick the right club for the distance and do it faster. No more wasting time searching for yardstick markers or sprinkler heads. Just upload the course from the online Swami Map Manager (subscription required) before your round, stand under an open sky, and the Swami's Insta-Lok technology does the rest, locking in the correct yardage to a target with minimal lag time. Even when riding in a cart, the yardage changes instantly. The Swami stores up to 10 courses at a time and automatically recognizes the course you're playing upon powering up. The Swami is also a breeze to use, with intuitive buttons and a large display that allows you to quickly cycle from hole to hole. And even though the Swami is precise and user-friendly, it costs about half as much as most other golf GPS systems. That's because Izzo streamlined the latest technology while maintaining only the most vital features in an effort to make the Swami more affordable. The navigator is built using the same state-of-the-art technology as the highest-end GPS units, but without the costly bells and whistles that most golfers don't really need or use. The Swami is perfectly legal to use in many handicaps and tournaments, as both the USGA and the R&A have allowed the use of distance measuring devices when the local governing committee permits it. Users should always check with the local golf pro if the event is a USGA-sanctioned tournament before using the Swami on the course. Other features include an easy-to-use PC connection for downloads and charging; a rechargeable lithium battery that runs for a minimum of 12 hours per charge; a water-resistant housing; and OS compatibility with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. The Swami 1500, which measures 3.75 by 1 by 2 inches (W x H x D), carries a 90-day warranty. Good and not so good July 30, 2010 Biff (Honolulu, HI USA) I went to a very popular, quite old course to try the Swami for the first time. Setup and use were very easy. It appeared to operate very well after leaving the tee box. The problem was yardages off the tee. I began the course on the back nine. The Swami read 20 yds shorter than the USGA golf marker in the ground on hole #11, 21 yds shorter on hole #14, 51 yds shorter on hole #16, and 21 yds shorter on hole #17. And yes, I did have the Swami on the correct holes each time, and the course has not been changed in many years, if ever. When I got to the front nine, Swami read 41 yds short on hole #1. It was at that point that I turned it off. On all the holes, once I left the tee box, the yardages appeared to be right on, but it was totally unacceptable off the tees.
When I received the unit, the first thing I noticed was that my favorite course was not available, so I requested it. That was almost 4 weeks ago, and it's still not available. In my limited experience with the unit, it definitely has some problems. Needless to say, I'm returning it.
Nice but don't get it wet July 30, 2010 D. Paulsen I have had the Swami for a year and have really enjoyed it. Most courses are mapped and when one was not, they would map it in a few days.
Normally, all I need is front, center, back. It is easy to read and seems to be very accurate.
Unfortunately, mine got a bit wet. Not a downpour just a sprinkle. The company info states it is "water resistant". Don't tempt fate. When it sprinkles, put it under cover. Mine is toast.
I will purchase another because it does all I need for a decent price. Wish it was a bit more waterproof, though.
Good Buy July 23, 2010 mmd The GPS works pretty well. If all you need is distance to the flag then you should be fine with this. No bells or whistles just yardage to the front, center or back.
Great simple device July 22, 2010 Ren Dawg 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received my Swami very quickly and was excited to get out on the course and try it out. Installing the drivers and the Course Management software on XP was a breeze. I found 7 out of the 10 courses that I wanted were already mapped and I added them to the Swami. The other 3 courses that I wanted I put in a request to have them mapped. Within 48HRS I received emails letting me know that all three had been mapped! That is the kind of service I love to see.
The first course I played the accuracy was off by hundreds of yards on every hole. I was pretty disappointed however I realized that the course had been redesigned in 1997 and the map was probably just outdated. I have put in a request to have the nice people at IZZO to remap it. Just to make sure that the device was working properly and I went to another local course and stood on the first tee and sure enough the numbers were spot on.
I am impressed at how fast the yardages come up, easy to read. However the thing I have been most impressed with is IZZO customer service. I love the fact that it only costs 10 bucks a year and all three of my requests were made within 48hrs. That just doesn't happen with too many companies now a days.
I couldn't be happier and all the other reviews on here saying how good the customer service is ultimately made my decision to go with SWAMI over the Bushnell Neo much easier. I am happy with my purchase especially for the price!
Excellent Product July 18, 2010 Moonman I'd give it 5 stars except it's not perfect. BUT, it's very good with what matters, yardage accuracy and course availability. I've used the IZZO for about 6 months on 25+ courses in Florida and Pennsylvania. No problem loading the courses (even obscure 9 hole course) and accuracy has been 95% solid. I used it 3 days in a row (two 18's and a 9)without recharging. If you're not looking for a highly detailed display and don't want to spend high dollar, this is highly recommended.
